Tomi ungerer, godfather of violets

Renowned as one of the most talented designers of his generation, since 1957 he has had an international career in many areas of graphic art.

His works for young audiences “Les Trois Brigands et Jean de la Lune” are known all over the world. Above all, Tomi Ungerer is a fine scrutineer of society and of his time. Touching on everything artistic, he has also dabbled in sculpture and has written numerous texts, many of which are autobiographical.

Tomi ungerer’s works speak to all generations. His poetic and deliciously cheeky drawings delight children and his collections of erotic texts and drawings are appreciated by adults. Aged 86, the Alsatian icon has lost none of his verve, his talent and absolutely does not think about retirement.

Child of war

Jean Thomas Ungerer was born in Strasbourg in 1931. Son of Théodore, engineer, manufacturer of astronomical clocks, artist and historian, and Alice, née Essler. During the Second World War, during the annexation of Alsace by Germany, he knew the indoctrination of the Nazis in his school in Colmar. Upon liberation, he was banned from speaking Alsatian at school when the French language was restored. He retraces this period in his book “A la guerre comme à la guerre” published in 1991.

After failing his baccalaureate twice, he decides to hitchhike to Scandinavia, crossing Russian lines in the middle of the Cold War. The drawings he made at this time were influenced by the existentialist movement.

In 1952, he enlisted in the body of the Méharistes in Algeria, but following a serious illness, he was discharged. Returning to Alsace, he joined the School of Decorative Arts in Strasbourg. He began to take an interest in the United States and frequented American students at the American Cultural Center in Strasbourg. He then fell in love with American literature, jazz and the New Yorker cartoonists.

An Alsatian in New York

After traveling to various European countries, he settled in New York with 60 dollars in his pocket and a canteen of drawings and manuscripts. He exhibited his satirical paintings there at the D’Arcy gallery. He is committed against racial segregation and the Vietnam War in a series of posters including the famous poster “Black Power / White Power” which has become cult.

Back in France in 1975, Tomi Ungerer bequeathed a large part of his work and his collection of toys to the Museums of Strasbourg, which devoted an exhibition to him. It illustrates a collection of popular German songs, “Das Grosse Liederbuch”, his greatest success in bookstores.

1981: World Cartoonist of the Year

In 1981, an exhibition organized at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris celebrated the 25-year career of Tomi Ungerer. The Salon International de la Caricature de Montréal designates him “world cartoonist” of the year. Two years later, he was decorated Commander in the Order of Arts and Letters in Paris by Jack Lang, who charged him with Franco-German cultural exchanges. He is also part of the Franco-German Interministerial Commission.

On the occasion of his 60th birthday, he publishes the first volume of his memories. In the process, he made a second donation of his works to the City of Strasbourg. In 1992, he was named one of the 500 most influential people in the world by the American Biographical Institute.

In 2001, the works of Tomi Ungerer were exhibited in Tokyo. For its 70th anniversary, the Strasbourg Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art is exhibiting works from its New York period.

Godfather of Violets

In 2007, Tomi Ungerer laid the first stone of the new hotel “Les Violettes” in Jungholtz, thus becoming the patron of the establishment.

In 2009, the Tomi Ungerer Museum was chosen by the architectural commission of the Council of Europe as one of the ten best museums in Europe.
