The search for relaxation and serenity typical of our civilization dissolves in the warm sweetness of the hammam. There is no specific time to go to the hammam, the choice is very personal.
Nevertheless, it is best to follow some tips. Unlike the sauna, the hammam takes place in an environment where the humidity is around 100% and the temperature fluctuates between 25 and 50°C, from the floor to the ceiling.
Unlike the sauna, the temperature is lower there, however, the time spent there being longer than in a sauna, the perspiration in a hammam is greater. Since the temperatures are lower and the steam hotter, the hammam cabins are not clad in wood, but in ceramic or tiled, like the shared bathrooms. The procedure for taking a steam room is ideally done in phases, similar to those needed for a sauna.
Before entering, it is advisable to drink a glass of water or herbal tea to avoid dehydration. Then you should take a lukewarm shower to clean the whole body with soap, then dry yourself.
It is also recommended to take a foot bath to warm the extremities.
The first phase (warm-up) usually lasts 15 to 20 minutes. Inside the hammam, you remain seated or semi-lying, surrounded by a towel or other breathable fabrics. In some hammams, in addition to steam, it is also possible to benefit from aromatherapy, with essential oils chosen to wake up, refresh, stimulate or relax. The colors of chromotherapy also have a beneficial effect on body and mind. We end with a cold shower and lie down for a few minutes of relaxation.
The duration of this first phase can be naturally reduced at the first sign of discomfort or in the event of pulsation in the temples, a symptom of an excessive variation in blood pressure.
The second phase (cooling down) involves a quick bath or cold shower to re-tonify the body and tighten the skin tissues.
The third phase foresees another cycle of Turkish bath – cold shower. Also in this case, at the end of the first two phases, the ideal solution is to relax for at least a quarter of an hour, even doing a light relaxing massage.
It is important to reintegrate lost liquids by drinking water, fruit juices or herbal teas. Here too, it is recommended not to have an empty or too full stomach, the recommended solution is to consume a fresh and light snack. Once you’re done, you can go get a massage or scrub.
In principle, it is good to adopt the same precautions provided for the sauna, i.e. those who suffer from cardiovascular diseases, too high or too low blood pressure, kidney or heart problems, should avoid the Turkish bath and, in in any case, it is advisable for everyone to carry out a medical check-up beforehand.
